A Short Constructed Response includes 4 things.

1. An Introduction. This is where you restate part of the question.

2. Then use your knowledge from your reading to answer the question.

3. Now give a specific example/detail from the text (include page number) in your answer.

4. A Conclusion that includes an opinion, or personalization.

For example:

-Make a Deeper Connection

       • text-to-self

       • text-to-text

       • text-to-world

or . . .

             • this makes me think . . .

             • this makes me realize . . .

             • this makes me wonder . . .

Here’s a question/ sample response from Wonder.

“What things did the author have to know in order to write this story?”

The author of the book Wonder probably had to know a lot about diseases in order to write this book.  She probably had to have some medical understanding of Auggie’s physical condition that affected his face. On page 104 for example, she calls his condition “Chromosome 5 Mutation.” She probably had to have researched that a lot. I saw a man once at King Soopers that had a burned face, it reminded me of Auggie.  I think this would be a horrible thing to have, but I think Auggie handles his condition pretty well.

(This would be a strong proficient answer.)

Adding another detail or example would make this and advanced score.

She also would probably have to know a lot about school, families and kids because she writes the way kids talk and the way moms and dads act.
